Picture Postcard Exhibition

Amsterdam / Munich,  2004 / 2005

The Picture Postcard Exhibition, a project by artist Anna Frydman in collaboration with graphic designer Tessa van der Waals, writer Alex de Vries and printers Mart Spruijt.

Anna Frydman studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and has been working as an artist since 1992. She lived and worked in the Netherlands until September 2002, when she moved to Munich.

The Picture Postcard Exhibition is a series of drawings that will be sent between October 2004 and July 2005 to a selected number of people.

Anna Frydman wrote the following on her project:

This is a special exhibition, because the drawings are not being shown in a conventional exhibition space. The exhibition space is flexible and extends over the paths of the postal system. Old paths, but still in use, just as they always have been. My drawings reach you via the postman. They are delivered through your letterbox and all you have to do is open the envelope. You won't encounter an original drawing, that's true, but the quality of the printing is exceptionally good and approximates the originals very closely, apart from the format. You can view the drawings in your own environment and create your own exhibition out of them, in your living room or in your bathroom. You can even carry them with you in a bag and give them to somebody else. This distribution and moving is what this exhibition seeks to achieve. It is important that art is seen and not hidden away. Art only becomes meaningful when it is seen. How it is used is up to you to decide. You can use it out of joy or out of anger and everything that lies between, but the advantage of the Picture Postcard Exhibition is that there is always that little moment of relief when you discover that the envelope you open at least doesn't contain a bill...

The set of 16 postcards can be purchased for EUR 20 plus postage.
The original, full-size drawings can be purchased
